Well, the creators of the NY Subway Smell map have found a way to get around the problems going on at onnyturf.com as the map is up and working even though it appears that onnyturf is still down.

While it’s been a few years since I’ve ridden on the NY Subway system, doing so was and probably still is a bit of an adventure.  The system has come a long way from the grafitti sprawl and crime ridden days of the ’70s, but it still can’t compare to the newer systems like those in DC or even Atlanta.

Just how much of an adventure you ask?  Well, the folks over at Gawker have created the NY Subway Smell Map.  I previewed the icons used on the map a few posts ago, but now you can experience the map in all of it’s glory.

Some of the more interesting locations when you click on more.

First up:

Lexington-3rd Ave-51st Street.  Visited by the 6, E, and V trains.  This station has body odor, chemicals, fecces, mold & wet, sewage,  and urine.  “Nothing beats this stench … Three day old wet pooch … Human-fungal smell … Rotting flesh … Sweat-drenched gym clothing covered in rancid butter.”

I guess it’s an acquired taste…

Next up:

34th St-6th Ave.  Visited by the B, D, F, V, N, Q, R, and W trains.  This station has body odor, chemicals, food, sewage, urine, and vomit. “Like old cheese and vomit, mixed with dog food … Halitosis and aged cabbage … Rank Swiss cheese … Sour milk … Pee in the air every day … Like an open corpse … Like a musty homeless person decomposing in musky homeless person urine … Caramel with a slight undertone of mildly rank underarm … Rodenticide.”

It seems that the funkiest of the funky stations are all in Manhattan, while there appear to be a few stations in Brooklyn and Queens with odors reported, none of the variety of the Manhattan stations.  2nd Ave - Houston St is a good example:

2nd Ave Houston St. Visited by the F and V trains.  This station has alcohol, body odor, feces, urine and sewage.  “F is for Fetid, Funky, Fresh poop … Vodka, stronger than the urine … Like being inside the bowels of a very sick animal … Like death mixed with poop … Oceans of waste … Sickly-sweet piss-decay, undertone of feces and tuberculosis … Rotting flesh.”

Ahhhh….. I LOVE NEW YORK! :D
